“Spring 2019: The Biggest Trend from Paris Fashion Week Isn’t What You Expect”

When you think of French style, what comes to mind? Usually, the first word that pops into our head is “effortless.” There’s just something about the French way of dressing—that je ne sais quoi—that always feels easy and a bit undone. French women even have a way of making red lipstick seem effortless (and we all know that drawing on the perfect red pout actually requires a lot of effort).

We guess it’s not surprising, then, that the biggest trend to come out of Paris Fashion Week for Spring/Summer 2019 isn’t a new It Bag or a singular must-have piece—no, it’s how you wear the bag.

At Chanel, the brand’s most recognizable staple, the chain strap purse, was styled in a fresh new way. The bags were worn two at a time, crossbody style, forming a luxurious X in the center of the chest. Recreating the look is simple—if you have two matching Chanel bags, of course. Add to your collection with our Lambskin Quilted Chain Clutch Flap Red, or Caviar Quilted Wallet On Chain WOC.

The Stella McCartney and Altuzarra runways also offered new ideas on how to carry your carryall. Both fashion houses showed oversize tote bags and duffels worn under the arm, clutch-style. To get in on the trend, put your arm around our Bottega Veneta Nappa Intrecciato Satchel Ebano, the Valentino’s Nappa Rockstud Large Tote, or the Balenciaga Mens Agneau Classic Oversize Top Handle Bag.

Speaking of Balenciaga, the iconic Parisian label put an unexpected twist on a classic look. Most Balenciaga models walked down the runway gripping an evening clutch—yes, even the male models. Men, now’s the time to get your hands on a boxy bag for nights out. Try the Alexander McQueen Metallic Suede Skull Box Clutch, the Bottega Veneta Satin Intreccio Evening Clutch, or the Prada Wool Crystal Clutch Nero Black Militare.

Finally, Givenchy gave top-handle bags a much-needed makeover. Instead of carrying the handle in hand (how boring), Givenchy suggests clutching it close to your chest, as if carrying a stack of textbooks. The vibe is a little studious, a little insouciant—but what else would you expect from the French? Test out the new top handle trend with our Gucci Calfskin GG Marmont Top Handle Bag, the Prada Saffiano Cuir Calfskin Top Handle Tote, or the Proenza Schouler Calfskin Hava Top Handle Bag.
